Most walkie talkie two way radios can be repaired including licence free types. Protea Electronics offers an expert, cost effective repair service for most makes of equipment. Equipment may be beyond economical repair (BER) if it has been subjected to a severe shock, such a fall from a great height, which has cracked the printed circuit board. Equipment that is driven over by a vehicle of sorts can also receive this type of damage when the board is buckled. This type of damage often pops components off the board when it buckles and the pads that the component(s) were soldered too are torn from the PCB. Since the boards in most modern transceivers have several layers of track running within the printed circuit board, once these are cracked there is no way to access the damaged track, hence the radio is declared BER.
Liquid ingress is another killer of two way radios and depending what sort of liquid has entered the radio and the action taken will decide if the radio can be repaired or not. Sometimes the radio is not dropped into a liquid but it is used in the rain. While most modern two way radios are water resistant to some degree this may not be a problem if the radio is dried after use in these conditions. What often happens is that the equipment was repaired and during this processes one of the seals is damaged and not replaced. This will then allow ingress which leads to corrosion and ultimately failure of the radio. If a walkie talkie is dropped into any form of liquid the best thing to do is immediately remove the battery, dry the outer casing and get the equipment into a repair shop as soon as possible. Do not place the battery back onto the radio as any internal liquid can short out components, even if the radio is switched off. This can lead to electrolysis which will further damage the radio and cause component failure. Something we often see is, rubber covers for accessory sockets are pulled off the radio, and so when no earpiece is in use liquid has a direct path into the radio.
Poor workmanship is another cause of two way radios getting to a stage where a repair is impossible. Modern two way radio equipment has tiny components and very small solder pads along with fine copper tracks. In order for the circuit to join with other components tracks run in several layers within the PC board itself. These are all connected using what is called through hole plating which is basically like a copper sleeve passing through the board. The tracks within the PCB are connected using this through hole plating. Incorrect repair methods, wrong tools, excessive heat and poor knowledge with regards to best practice when replacing components often leads to the solder pad(s) and/or the through hole plating been torn from the PCB. In most cases the radio is then deemed to be BER.
